“The story of an hour” by
Kate Chopin taking place in 1894 describes how a young women Mullard Louise
handles the news of her husband’s death. Louise sister Josephine has broken the
news to her, and after Louise has gathered the news she went to her room to
reconcile her thoughts. In that grieving moment Louise has found herself
feeling free although she knew she would suddenly find herself in sorrow.
Louise felt that something was coming for her as the author states “She was beginning
to recognize this thing that was approaching to possess her, and she was
striving to beat it back with her will—as little whispered word escaped her
slightly parted lips. She said it over and over under the breath: “free, free,
free!” this showing that Louise was letting go fearlessly willing to be free. Louise
felt something coming for her although she couldn’t gather what it was she has
died minutes after. As her husband Mr. Mallard comes into the room she dies
from joy, even though she was earning to be free. “The Story Of An Hour” has a
twist with the understanding of two character traits of Louise. Louise loves
her husband but even with sorrow she earns to be free, and dies from joy as she
sees him again.
This story describes how a
close death leaves you confused on how to proceed next. Louise is filled with
emotions of relief as a women she regains her strength of power and imagines
her future without her husband by taking control of her life. This shows how
there is a sense of relief of her gaining self control that she lost as a women.
The twist in the end shows that she still loves her husband as she dies of joy.
Ironically this story describes that you can find your willingness to go on.
